Servants on Standby (S.O.S.) is a ministry overseen by our deacons. We are people who want to be made aware of the needs of others in our church and, whenever possible, provide resources, information, time, talents and most importantly our prayers in order to help meet these needs. Christ said in Mark 10:45: "For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life as a ransom for many."
How does S.O.S. work? Let's say a member of our congregation needs some home repair work, but does not have family/friends able to help or the finances to hire someone. They can e-mail sos@elmhurstcrc.org and request assistance. The S.O.S. coordinators receive this e-mail and then send out an S.O.S. call to all the people who have signed up to be Servants on Standby. The message will be generic and describe the need and the skills required and urgency of the situation, along with an estimation of the time involved. Individuals can reply back to the coordinator expressing their availability and desire to assist. If you are not able to assist you can pray for the individual need, and in doing so you have already made a huge impact!
S.O.S. has the ability to respond to many different needs. In the past we have helped out with things such as home repairs, bike repairs, gutter cleaning, transportation needs, lawn care, carpet removal, moving help, etc.
The more people involved with S.O.S. the greater our ability to serve as we network our individual gifts and talents and become a growing, responsive, serving community. We encourage all members of our church to be Servants on Standby, ready to serve when able and called.
Contact the S.O.S. coordinator at sos@elmhurstcrc.org for assistance, questions or to sign up to be part of the S.O.S. Team.
